Sustainability

Many companies tout sustainable and ethical manufacturing as their competitive advantage. We at Flowers think it should come as standard practice.

WHERE ARE YOUR PRODUCTS MADE AND SOURCED?

We source locally (in Los Angeles) as much as possible. If local vendors are not available, we prioritize production in the US over international production. Occasionally, US production is not possible in order to bring you the quality we strive for. In these cases we source overseas but not until we’ve scoured high and low for comparable vendors in the US. This fierce vetting process greatly reduces our overall carbon footprint since we reduce the need for additional gas/fuel for overseas transportation.

WHY DON'T YOU USE COMPOSTABLE PACKAGING MATERIALS?

We love composting! But the harsh reality is that although cities are increasing access to curbside composting programs, statistics still show that 1) only 27% of US families have access to composting, and 2) organic waste occupies the largest category of landfill waste at 294 million tons per year (Yale University, 2013). Additionally, compostable packaging cannot go into curbside recycling and can actually contaminate recycling systems, doing more harm than good. Until we can be sure there is more access to composting programs, we will choose packaging that is 100% curbside recyclable.

HOW ARE YOUR PRODUCTS SUSTAINABLE?
Thank you for asking! We pride ourselves in working with the best vendors that have the highest standards in sustainability. See below for a list of our products and their sustainable qualities.

Packaging
We use the minimum amount of packaging necessary to ensure your order gets to you safely and is protected from the elements. We reuse shipping boxes as often as possible, and also use the smallest box necessary for your orders - no excessively large boxes.

  • Shipping boxes– 100% recycled with post-consumer paper
  • Paper product bags – FSC Certified, 100% paper, 100% recyclable
  • Shipping labels – FSC Certified, 100% recyclable
  • Reinforced packaging tape – 100% kraft paper gummed tape reinforced with fiberglass, 100% recyclable
Products
Large, established corporations produce thousands of quantities (sometimes hundreds of thousands) to make certain they capture the maximum amount of revenue, often leading to mass overproduction. Just Google "fashion industry destroying product" to learn more about these poor practices. We at Flowers purposely produce in small batches to only fill into the demand we think we need. We actually want to sell out so we don't leave any excess inventory and further add to fashion's problem of overproduction. Additionally, creating in small batches ensures you get the first-cut, highest level of quality.
